NYC in February 2027: Westminster, Orchid Show, Midwinter Recess & Winter Planning
February 2027 is still a full winter month, but it already has several confirmed calendar anchors. Westminster brings major dog-show events to the Javits Center and Madison Square Garden at the start of the month, the New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show opens February 6, NYC public schools break for Midwinter Recess February 15–19, and Bryant Park’s 2026/27 skating season ends February 28. A good February trip combines those dated anchors with museums, Broadway, food and flexible outdoor time rather than relying on an all-day outdoor itinerary.

Westminster opens February with a split-venue NYC sports event
The 151st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is scheduled for January 30 and February 1–2, 2027. The current official schedule uses two venues: daytime competition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and major evening judging at Madison Square Garden.
That split matters for ticket buyers because Westminster explicitly says Javits Center tickets do not grant access to Madison Square Garden and vice versa. The February 2 evening program includes Sporting, Working and Terrier group judging followed by Best in Show.

February 6: NYBG Orchid Show opens in the Bronx
The New York Botanical Garden Orchid Show runs February 6 through April 25, 2027 in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. The 2027 exhibition features landscape artists Andy Cao and Xavier Perrot using glass, crystal, stone and orchids to create light-focused installations.

February 1 and 2 are important NYC public-school calendar dates
NYCPS lists Monday, February 1 as a Professional Development Day. Students at high schools and schools serving only grades 6–12 are not in attendance, while other students attend school.
Tuesday, February 2 is the official start of the Spring Semester. These are local calendar details rather than tourist events, but they matter for families and help explain why school schedules are not completely normal at the start of the month.
Use the official NYCPS calendar for school-specific planning instead of assuming February 1 is a systemwide closure.
February 15–19 is Midwinter Recess
The official 2026–27 NYCPS calendar lists Midwinter Recess from Monday, February 15 through Friday, February 19, with schools closed. February 15 is also Presidents’ Day on the city holiday calendar.
For visitors, a school recess can increase family demand at museums, skating sessions and kid-focused attractions even though ordinary private businesses remain open according to their own schedules.
If a family attraction has timed admission, compare February 15–19 inventory earlier than you would for an ordinary winter weekday.
Bryant Park skating continues through February 28
Bank of America Winter Village keeps its skating rink open through February 28, 2027 even though the Holiday Shops closed back on January 3. The rink remains a real February attraction rather than a December-only experience.
Admission to skate is free, but reservations are required and skate rental is paid. Current pricing changes by date and demand, so the exact reservation page matters more than a generic seasonal price.
Do not confuse the January 3 Holiday Shops end date with the February 28 skating-season end date.
Build the rest of February around winter-proof anchors
Museums, Broadway, food neighborhoods and long indoor meals are reliable February building blocks. Use outdoor attractions in shorter forecast-driven windows instead of stacking bridges, waterfronts and exposed observation decks into one day.
A cold clear day can be excellent for skyline views, while wind or precipitation can quickly change the value of the same reservation. Keep at least one exposed attraction flexible until the forecast is useful.
A strong February itinerary should survive a weather change without losing the whole day.
Do not publish an unconfirmed 2027 Lunar New Year parade date
Lunar New Year falls during the February travel period, but individual NYC parade, firecracker and community-event schedules are organizer-specific and can be announced later than the holiday itself.
This guide deliberately does not reuse a previous Chinatown or Flushing parade date as a 2027 fact. Add those events only after the current organizer or official tourism source publishes the actual 2027 schedule.
