JFK to Lower Manhattan: AirTrain + E, A Train or Taxi?
JFK is one of the easiest airports to connect with Lower Manhattan by subway. The strongest default is usually AirTrain to Jamaica followed by the E train to World Trade Center, while Howard Beach plus the A can fit some Fulton Street or Brooklyn-adjacent destinations. A yellow taxi remains the simplest door-to-door option for groups and heavy luggage.

Take AirTrain JFK to Jamaica Station and transfer to the E subway toward World Trade Center. The E terminates in Lower Manhattan, which removes the extra Manhattan transfer that many airport routes require.
For a hotel near WTC, Fulton Street or the western Financial District, this is usually the first route to compare.
Howard Beach + A is useful when the exact destination favors the west-side subway path
AirTrain also connects with the A subway at Howard Beach. The A serves Lower Manhattan through Fulton Street and can be useful when your hotel or onward route fits the A better than the E.
Do not choose Howard Beach simply because it looks closer to Manhattan on the map. Jamaica plus the E is often the cleaner route to World Trade Center.
A taxi has the same Manhattan flat-fare framework as a Midtown trip
NYC TLC currently sets a $70 flat fare for yellow-taxi trips between JFK and Manhattan, including Lower Manhattan. Applicable surcharges, tolls and tip are additional.
The taxi becomes more competitive when several travelers share one vehicle or when large luggage makes the AirTrain-to-subway transfer unattractive.
Use the hotel door to choose between E and A
Lower Manhattan has several large transit complexes. A hotel beside World Trade Center may strongly favor the E, while a Fulton Street or east-side destination can make the A or a short final taxi reasonable.
Check the exact entrance and elevator needs rather than planning only to the neighborhood name.
