Best Airport for Lower Manhattan: JFK, LaGuardia or Newark?
For Lower Manhattan, the best airport answer is different from the Times Square answer. JFK has a clean AirTrain-to-E-subway path to World Trade Center, Newark can be surprisingly strong through Newark Penn and PATH, and LaGuardia is geographically close but still depends on a bus-to-subway transfer or a road trip. Choose the whole airport-to-hotel chain rather than the airport that looks closest on a map.

JFK is the cleanest one-seat subway continuation after AirTrain
Take AirTrain JFK to Jamaica and transfer to the E subway toward World Trade Center. That makes JFK unusually simple for hotels near the World Trade Center, Fulton Street and the Financial District compared with many other Manhattan destinations.
The AirTrain fare is currently $8.75. Add the current subway fare for the complete public-transit trip. For travelers with manageable luggage, the biggest advantage is avoiding a second Manhattan transfer.
LaGuardia is close, but the route still begins with a bus
For Terminals B and C, the Q70 LGA Link is fare-free and connects with the subway in Queens. From Jackson Heights, the E runs directly to World Trade Center.
That creates a low-cost route, but the luggage transfer from bus to subway remains part of the trip. For a family or group with several bags, a taxi or ride-hail can be worth comparing because LaGuardia is physically close to Manhattan.
Newark becomes more attractive for Downtown than many visitors expect
NJ TRANSIT currently describes a Financial District trip as roughly 45–55 minutes via NJ TRANSIT to Newark Penn Station and PATH to World Trade Center. NJ TRANSIT lists $12.30 to Newark Penn; the Port Authority PATH single-ride fare is $3.25, for a $15.55 transit total before any additional local connection.
That is a different pattern from the classic Newark-to-Midtown trip. If your hotel is Downtown, transferring at Newark Penn instead of riding all the way to New York Penn can avoid unnecessary backtracking.
Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station and Newark Penn Station are different stations. NJ TRANSIT connects the airport rail station with Newark Penn, where you transfer to PATH.
Hotel location inside Lower Manhattan still matters
World Trade Center, Fulton Street, Wall Street, Battery Park and the Seaport are close on a city map but not identical when you have luggage. A hotel beside WTC favors E/PATH arrivals; a hotel farther east may make a short taxi after rail or a direct airport car more attractive.
Map the exact hotel entrance before deciding that one airport is universally best for “Downtown.”

- Best flight is at EWR — do not reject it automatically just because it is in New Jersey
- Best flight is at JFK — the E train gives Lower Manhattan a simpler rail finish than many Midtown destinations
