JFK to Downtown Brooklyn: AirTrain + A, LIRR or Taxi?
JFK has two strong public-transit patterns for Downtown Brooklyn. The lowest-cost default is AirTrain to Howard Beach followed by the A to Jay St–MetroTech. The faster rail alternative is AirTrain to Jamaica and LIRR to Atlantic Terminal, where the final walk or subway leg depends on the hotel.

AirTrain + A is the strongest low-cost default for Jay St–MetroTech
Take AirTrain JFK to Howard Beach and transfer to the A subway toward Brooklyn and Manhattan. The A serves Jay St–MetroTech, a major Downtown Brooklyn station near MetroTech, Brooklyn Heights and several hotels.
For a standard full-fare rider, the current fare is $8.75 for AirTrain plus $3 for the subway, or $11.75 total.
JFK to Downtown Brooklyn for four adults: worked group fare example
Four adults traveling together can use the JFK AirTrain group discount by tapping the same payment method for all four riders within five minutes. The AirTrain portion is $8.75 for the first rider plus $4.50 for each of the next three, or $22.25 for the group. Four separate $3.00 subway fares add $12.00, producing a combined $34.25 AirTrain-plus-A-subway cost for the group.
The calculation assumes one AirTrain exit at Howard Beach and one regular subway entry per adult. It does not cover an LIRR ticket, additional paid subway entries, or any onward ground transportation. If traveling separately or unable to meet the five-minute same-payment-method requirement, do not rely on the group discount.
Compared with an airport taxi or ride-hail, $34.25 is a useful public-transit baseline, not a complete door-to-door estimate. A vehicle may be more convenient for four large suitcases, children or a hotel far from Jay St–MetroTech; get the actual vehicle quote including fees and tolls before comparing.
For four eligible adults: AirTrain $22.25 + subway $12.00 = $34.25. The same AirTrain payment method must cover all four taps within five minutes.
Before boarding: verify Howard Beach AirTrain and A train service
JFK AirTrain uses separate Jamaica and Howard Beach branches. Howard Beach is the transfer point for the A train route described here; Jamaica is the branch for LIRR to Atlantic Terminal. Do not follow an AirTrain Jamaica sign if your plan requires the direct A connection at Howard Beach.
Temporary AirTrain maintenance can replace part of the airport train trip with a free shuttle bus, including overnight work. Check the live official airport alert and MTA planned service changes on the day of travel. If Howard Beach service is disrupted, the Jamaica and LIRR option may be worth checking instead, but its price and service pattern are different.
Accessible AirTrain connections do not guarantee that every subway entrance or the final hotel walk is step-free. Check the specific A train elevator status and hotel entrance if traveling with a stroller, wheelchair or heavy luggage.
Use the official JFK AirTrain status and MTA service updates before leaving the terminal; never assume a published late-night route is unaffected by maintenance.
AirTrain + LIRR can be faster when Atlantic Terminal fits the destination
Take AirTrain to Jamaica and use LIRR service toward Atlantic Terminal. Atlantic Terminal is beside Barclays Center and works especially well for Prospect Heights, Park Slope and the southern side of Downtown Brooklyn.
LIRR pricing varies by time and ticket product, so check TrainTime for the current fare rather than relying on an old fixed number.
Brooklyn taxi trips are metered, not covered by the JFK–Manhattan flat fare
NYC TLC applies the $70 JFK flat fare only to trips between JFK and Manhattan. Trips between JFK and other New York City destinations, including Brooklyn, use the standard metered fare plus applicable charges.
That makes traffic a bigger part of the cost comparison. A taxi can still be the best choice for several travelers sharing one vehicle or for heavy luggage.
Choose Jay St or Atlantic Terminal from the hotel door, not the neighborhood label
A hotel near Brooklyn Heights or MetroTech may strongly favor the A to Jay St–MetroTech. A hotel near Barclays Center, Boerum Hill or Park Slope may make Atlantic Terminal more convenient.
Check the final walk, elevators and weather before deciding which rail pattern is actually easier.
