Newark Airport to Times Square: NJ TRANSIT, Taxi or Uber?
For Times Square, Newark is strongest when you use its direct rail relationship with New York Penn Station. NJ TRANSIT gets you to Penn, then the final Midtown leg is a walk or a short subway ride. A direct car can still make sense for groups, heavy luggage or late arrivals, but EWR is outside NYC yellow-taxi pickup jurisdiction.
NJ TRANSIT currently lists roughly 30 minutes from the airport rail station to New York Penn.
Penn Station is south of Times Square; choose based on luggage and hotel location.
EWR is especially competitive for hotels near Penn Station and Times Square.

NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn is the strongest default for many Times Square trips
Use the airport rail connection to reach Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, then take an NJ TRANSIT train to New York Penn Station. NJ TRANSIT currently lists the adult fare at $17.25 and the rail trip at about 30 minutes from the airport rail station to Penn.
Penn Station is south of Times Square. From there, walk if your bags are manageable and the weather is good, or use a short subway trip when the hotel entrance is closer to the Times Square station complex.
Do not confuse Newark Liberty Airport Rail Station with Newark Penn Station. They are different stations.
The rail option is especially good when the hotel is on the south side of Times Square
Hotels around the Garment District, 34th Street or the southern edge of Times Square can make the Penn Station arrival unusually convenient. A hotel farther north or west may make the final subway or taxi leg more useful.
Map the exact hotel door from Penn Station before comparing Newark with JFK or LaGuardia.
A direct car makes more sense as the group gets larger or luggage gets heavier
Rail is priced per passenger; ride-hail and private-car quotes are mostly per vehicle. That means a direct car becomes more competitive for a family or group, especially after a long flight with several suitcases.
Traffic through the Hudson crossings remains the major downside. A road transfer can be very convenient door to door while still taking longer than rail at busy times.
Do not plan to hail a NYC yellow taxi at Newark Airport
EWR is outside New York City taxi jurisdiction. NYC yellow taxis do not operate the normal passenger pickup system at Newark Airport.
For a direct vehicle from EWR, use the airport’s authorized ground transportation, a ride-hail pickup or a prearranged car service and compare the final quote including tolls and fees.
Late-night and service-change checks still matter
NJ TRANSIT schedules, airport rail connections and onward subway service vary by time. A route that is easy during the day can involve longer waiting or a less convenient final connection late at night.
Check the current NJ TRANSIT trip planner before leaving the terminal and compare a direct-car quote if the wait or service pattern becomes poor.
A simple EWR → Times Square decision
- Solo traveler or couple + Midtown hotel — start with NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn
- Hotel is near Penn/Garment District — Newark can be one of the easiest NYC airport choices
- Family/group with luggage — compare the total rail cost with a direct vehicle quote
- Late arrival or disrupted rail — use current NJ TRANSIT status and keep ride-hail/private car as fallback
- Do not expect a NYC yellow-taxi queue for pickups at EWR
