Upper East Side is better for Museum Mile
The Met, Guggenheim and other Fifth Avenue cultural institutions make the east side especially efficient for museum-heavy days.
Madison and Lexington Avenue corridors also make the neighborhood feel more formal and shopping-oriented in places.
Upper West Side is better for Lincoln Center and Natural History
The Upper West Side combines the American Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Center, Central Park and Riverside Park with residential Broadway and Amsterdam/Columbus Avenue corridors.
It is often easier to build a relaxed evening around dinner, a walk and a neighborhood bar or café.
Central Park does not make the two sides interchangeable
Crossing Central Park can take longer than the map suggests, especially when your destination is several avenues beyond the park edge.
If the same museum, school, hospital or family connection will anchor multiple days, stay on that side rather than planning to cross the park repeatedly.
