Newark Airport to Downtown Brooklyn: Train + Subway or Car?
Newark is usually the least direct airport for Downtown Brooklyn because the trip must cross both the Hudson River and the East River. The simplest rail chain is usually NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn followed by the subway to Brooklyn. A lower-cost alternative can use Newark Penn + PATH + subway, but it adds another transfer.

EWR makes more sense when the airfare, nonstop or schedule is meaningfully better.

Newark usually adds the most transfer friction for Brooklyn. Compare the flight advantage with the full rail or car journey before booking.
New York Penn + subway is the simpler public-transit chain
Take the airport rail connection to Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station, then NJ TRANSIT to New York Penn Station. From Penn, continue by subway to Downtown Brooklyn.
NJ TRANSIT currently lists $17.25 for the adult airport-to-New-York-Penn ticket. Add the current $3 subway fare for a $20.25 standard full-fare total.
Newark Penn + PATH + subway can cost less but adds a transfer
An alternative is NJ TRANSIT from the airport rail station to Newark Penn, PATH to World Trade Center, then the subway into Brooklyn. With current fares, that is $12.30 + $3.25 + $3, or $18.55 for a standard adult.
The trade-off is another handoff with luggage. Choose this route only when the exact Brooklyn destination and live service make the extra transfer worthwhile.
October 11–November 14, 2026: modified Newark Airport rail service
Newark Liberty International Airport warns that NJ TRANSIT is running modified train schedules from October 11 through November 14, 2026 during the final phase of Amtrak Portal North Bridge work. Trains still serve Newark Liberty International Airport, but some rail services using the Portal Bridge corridor may run less often.
That means the published $17.25 ticket to New York Penn Station does not guarantee the usual connection or a particular departure time. Check NJ TRANSIT Trip Planner and current airport alerts on your travel day, and add a connection buffer if you need to make a flight, cruise or timed event.
For Brooklyn, also compare the Newark Penn + PATH to World Trade Center transfer when the New York Penn rail leg is inconvenient. PATH and the MTA subway are separately ticketed, and extra transfer time can outweigh the small fare difference.
During Oct 11–Nov 14 rail work, confirm the train actually operating before choosing the shortest-looking Newark-to-Brooklyn itinerary.
Through November 20: weekday AirTrain Newark shuttle instead of terminal trains
According to the Port Authority’s October 23 travel advisory, through Friday, November 20, 2026, the AirTrain Newark connection between Newark Liberty International Airport Rail Station and the airline terminals is suspended on weekdays from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shuttle buses replace that segment and also serve rental cars and P4 parking. AirTrain service between the terminals continues.
Separately, NJ TRANSIT is operating modified rail schedules October 11 through November 14 because of Portal North Bridge work. Airport rail service continues, but some trains run less often or at different times. A timetable or travel-time estimate from before the works should not be used as a guaranteed connection.
Confirm the live NJ TRANSIT departure, allow extra time for the rail-station shuttle, and follow the posted airport signs rather than searching for a train that is temporarily suspended. Weekday Midtown Direct services are diverted to Hoboken during the construction period; this is distinct from Newark Airport trains that continue to run on modified schedules.
For weekday travel before November 21, check the 5 a.m.–3 p.m. AirTrain shuttle arrangements and the live NJ TRANSIT timetable before relying on any quoted airport-to-city journey time.
A direct car removes transfers but crosses the most traffic-sensitive geography
Ride-hail or a prearranged car can be useful for a family or group because it avoids the airport rail, NJ TRANSIT and subway transfers.
The downside is the long cross-region road trip, tolls and traffic through New Jersey, Manhattan or the harbor crossings. Compare the live quote and estimated time before committing.
Do not expect a NYC yellow-taxi pickup queue at Newark
EWR is outside NYC taxi pickup jurisdiction. Yellow and green NYC taxis cannot use the normal passenger pickup system at Newark Airport.
