Penn Station NYC Guide: Trains, Subway Connections and How to Navigate It
Penn Station is not one simple hall. It is a large Midtown rail complex shared by several operators, with entrances on multiple blocks and direct links to the subway. The easiest visit starts by knowing which railroad you are using before you arrive.
Centered around 31st–34th Streets near Seventh and Eighth Avenues.
Each operator has its own signage, ticketing and boarding flow.
Do not navigate only by the words “Penn Station.”
Know your railroad before entering
Amtrak, Long Island Rail Road and NJ TRANSIT all use the Penn Station complex, but their passenger areas and boarding procedures differ. Check the operator on your ticket first and follow that operator’s signage.
For Amtrak, Moynihan Train Hall on the west side of Eighth Avenue is the main passenger hall.
Subway connections are useful but easy to confuse
The 1, 2 and 3 trains serve 34 St–Penn Station on Seventh Avenue, while the A, C and E serve 34 St–Penn Station on Eighth Avenue. Those are different station complexes on opposite sides of Penn Station.
Choose the subway entrance that matches the side of the rail complex you need instead of walking underground without a plan.
Leave more time than the map suggests
Penn Station can be crowded, and track assignments may appear close to departure. Arrive with enough time to find the correct operator area, especially with luggage, children or mobility needs.
For time-sensitive trips, use the current operator app or official departure boards rather than an old station map.
Use the neighborhood to orient yourself
Madison Square Garden sits above Penn Station, Moynihan is to the west across Eighth Avenue, and Herald Square is a short walk east. Knowing those landmarks makes street-level exits much easier to understand.
