Broadway Week keeps its official 2-for-1 promotion running through September 20, while US Open finals land September 12–13 and the 100th Feast of San Gennaro begins in Little Italy on September 17. The second half of the month shifts toward Climate Week NYC and the UN high-level period, with NYC DOT designating September 21–25 as Gridlock Alert Days. Brooklyn Book Festival runs September 20–28 with free literary events across the city, while the 64th New York Film Festival opens September 25 at Lincoln Center and Global Citizen Festival brings a major Central Park crowd on September 26. The strongest plan is to use date-specific guides for fixed events and keep weather, transit, visitor access and street operations flexible around them.

September 6: remembrance week begins before the anniversary
FDNY’s official September 11th remembrance calendar lists the Father Mychal Judge Walk of Remembrance for Sunday, September 6 at the Father Mychal Judge Memorial, West 31st Street and Seventh Avenue in Manhattan. FDNY describes it as a public memorial gathering honoring the department chaplain killed while ministering to firefighters at the World Trade Center.
The current FDNY calendar does not publish a start time for the September 6 gathering and explicitly tells visitors to check back for updated times and added events. Do not copy an hour from a previous year into the 2026 plan.
Use the dedicated September 11 guide for the full remembrance week. For Sep 6 specifically, treat the date and location as confirmed but the start time as still unconfirmed.
September 7: Labor Day changes the operating rules
Monday, September 7 is Labor Day. NYC Dayline’s holiday guide combines the practical city-service changes with the weekend planning layer: alternate side parking and meters are suspended, sanitation collection is suspended, schools are closed and other services follow holiday schedules.
J’Ouvert street closures begin at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, September 6, before the Monday-morning event. Use the live NYC311 and traffic pages on the morning itself rather than relying only on a static holiday summary.
If your plan depends on parking, trash collection, a time-sensitive ferry trip or crossing the Brooklyn event footprint Sunday night, check the same-day official status before leaving.
September 8: the UN General Assembly session opens before world-leader week
The United Nations lists the opening of the 81st General Assembly session for Tuesday, September 8. NYC Dayline’s current operational source places the formal opening at 3 p.m. New York time.
NYC DOT now has two separate Sep 8 signals: its Weekly Traffic Advisory lists UNGA street closures at the discretion of the NYPD, including FDR and defined Midtown East/Upper East Side zones, while the longer UNGA construction embargo begins at 12:01 a.m. and runs through September 29. The closure advisory and the embargo are not the same thing.
Sep 8 is an important UN operational date, but the General Debate does not begin until Sep 22. Use the dedicated UNGA guide for the current Sep 8 street list rather than extending it to later dates.
September 8–20: NYC Broadway Week keeps the 2-for-1 window open
NYC Broadway Week Fall 2026 runs through Sunday, September 20. New York City Tourism + Conventions lists 25 participating Broadway shows in the official fall campaign and describes the offer as two-for-one tickets, with upgraded ticket options available for select shows.
The organizer also says the promotion is subject to availability and blackout dates may apply. Treat the live Broadway Week landing page as the booking source rather than assuming every show, date or seat section in the original announcement is still available.

September 9: Taste of Times Square and a public official NYFW stream overlap
Times Square Alliance schedules Taste of Times Square for Wednesday, September 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. The 2026 footprint runs along West 46th Street from Seventh to Ninth avenues and the Broadway Plazas between West 45th and West 47th streets. NYC DOT’s current Weekly Traffic Advisory also lists Taste of Times Square Fair among Sep 9 events with street closures at the discretion of the NYPD.
More than 30 restaurants are participating. Most tastes are priced at $5 with some $10 items, and the event uses a wristband payment system. At 7:30 p.m. ET, CFDA and eBay also stream Endless Runway: The Archive on eBay Live, a one-night American-fashion retrospective and live auction featuring more than 150 rare and archival pieces.

September 9–15: New York Fashion Week overlaps the city calendar
CFDA’s current preliminary Official September 2026 NYFW Schedule runs from Thursday, September 10 through Tuesday, September 15, while major presentations including Ralph Lauren and Coach appear on Wednesday, September 9. As of September 5, NYC Dayline has not found a newer CFDA publication replacing that preliminary schedule with a final one.
The schedule is not a public ticket calendar. Many runway shows are invitation, industry, buyer or press events. The Sep 9 CFDA/eBay Endless Runway stream is a useful exception: it is an official online fashion event that anyone can watch without pretending a private runway show is public.
September 10: NYC public schools reopen and US Open daytime grounds are free
Thursday, September 10 is the first day of the 2026–27 NYC Public Schools year. Families should confirm Student OMNY or assigned school-bus details, school-specific arrival and dismissal times, device-storage procedures and the new 2026–27 AI/screen-time guidance before Day One.
The US Open also lists its grounds as free and open to the public during the day on September 10, with gates at 11 a.m.; the women’s singles semifinals are the separate evening session at 7 p.m. These are two very different city rhythms happening on the same day.

September 11: the 25th anniversary changes Lower Manhattan
The National September 11 Memorial & Museum lists its private 25th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony and official livestream beginning at 8:40 a.m. The Memorial ceremony is not open to the public, but the Memorial says members of the public may pay tribute when the Memorial reopens that afternoon.
Tribute in Light begins at dusk, and a special one-hour “9/11 Tribute in Light: Live from Lower Manhattan” broadcast begins at 8 p.m. ET across ABC and multiple Disney platforms. Lower Manhattan is also covered by a special-event NYC DOT construction embargo through the end of September 11, so use subway and walking as the default and leave extra time.
Do not copy a reopening hour from an older year: the current 2026 anniversary page says “that afternoon” without a precise public reopening time.
September 12: UN Headquarters closes to public visitors
United Nations Visitors Services says UN Headquarters will be closed to visitors from September 12 through October 4 because of the General Debate period.
In-person guided tours are scheduled to resume October 5. This public-access closure is separate from the September 8 session opening, the September 8–29 DOT construction embargo and the September 22 start of the General Debate.

September 12–13: US Open finals weekend in Queens
The official US Open schedule lists the women’s singles final for Saturday, September 12 at 4 p.m. and the men’s singles final for Sunday, September 13 at 2 p.m. Gates are listed for 11 a.m. on both finals days.
The 7 train and LIRR serve Mets-Willets Point, but the LIRR station there is not ADA accessible. Riders who need step-free rail access should use the current US Open accessibility guidance rather than assuming both rail options work the same way.
September 17–27: the 100th Feast of San Gennaro takes over Little Italy
The Feast of San Gennaro runs Thursday, September 17 through Sunday, September 27 across Little Italy. The official footprint follows Mulberry Street from Canal to Houston streets, plus sections of Hester and Grand streets.
The 2026 edition is the 100th annual Feast. September 19 is the central religious date: the official calendar lists the Solemn High Mass and religious procession with the statue of San Gennaro from 2 to 4 p.m. The Grand Procession is scheduled Saturday, September 26 from 2 to 4 p.m.

September 18–29: overlapping UN high-level calendars shape the final third of the month
The United Nations General Assembly High-level Week 2026 overview uses September 18–28 as the broader high-level frame, beginning with the SDG Moment on September 18. The President of the General Assembly’s meetings calendar separately labels September 22–29 as “High-Level Week” for the General Debate and high-level meetings over which the President presides.
These date ranges are overlapping official frames, not a contradiction. The General Debate itself runs September 22 through Saturday, September 26 and concludes Monday, September 28. September 29 is a separate high-level plenary on the total elimination of nuclear weapons, scheduled for 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 3–6 p.m.
For transportation planning, do not turn either UN calendar range into a universal traffic window. NYC DOT designates Monday, September 21 through Friday, September 25 as Gridlock Alert Days and says average Midtown motor-vehicle speeds during UNGA week are historically under four miles per hour. The separate UN General Assembly construction embargo runs September 8 through September 29.
Use UN calendars for meeting dates and live NYC DOT, NYPD, NYC311 and MTA information for the trip itself; for Sep 21–25, make rail the default for fixed-time Manhattan plans.
September 20–27: Climate Week NYC puts 1,000+ events across the city
Climate Week NYC officially runs September 20 through 27 alongside the UN high-level period. Climate Group says the official Events Program includes more than 1,000 events across twelve themes, ranging from community and cultural programs to business, finance and policy sessions.
For most residents and visitors, the useful entry point is the official event-search calendar, which can be filtered to Public events and by in-person, virtual or hybrid format. Climate Group’s FAQ still calls the September 21 Opening Ceremony and September 21–22 Hub Live invite-only, but its newer Attend page now offers Hub Live through ticketed registration at $1,100 per person.

September 20–28: Brooklyn Book Festival spans virtual, family and Festival Day programs
Brooklyn Book Festival runs September 20 through 28 with nine days of free literary events, both in person and virtual. Virtual Festival Day opens the week on September 20, while Bookend events take place at venues across all five boroughs throughout the run.
Children’s Day is Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Brooklyn Borough Hall. The flagship Festival Day & Literary Marketplace follows Sunday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. around Brooklyn Borough Hall and nearby Downtown Brooklyn venues.

September 25: NYFF64 opens at Lincoln Center
The 64th New York Film Festival runs September 25 through October 12, with most screenings centered at Film at Lincoln Center. General-public single-ticket sales begin Tuesday, September 15 at 12 p.m. ET, ten days before Opening Night. After the sale opens, use the live screening calendar for current availability rather than assuming every title still has inventory.
James Gray’s Paper Tiger is the September 25 Opening Night selection. Standard Main Slate and Spotlight tickets are currently $35 for the general public, while Currents, Revivals and Talks are $22; gala pricing is higher and individual prices can change.

September 26: Global Citizen Festival fills the Great Lawn during UNGA week
Global Citizen Festival takes over Central Park’s Great Lawn on Saturday, September 26. The organizer lists gates at 2 p.m., music at 4 p.m., no entry after about 8 p.m. and an expected finish around 10 p.m.
The September 10 lineup update adds Alicia Keys & Friends, Victoria Monét, YEONJUN and YOSHIKI to the previously announced bill. Because the festival lands on the final Saturday of the UN General Debate, rail plus walking is a stronger default than a tight car-based plan across Manhattan.

September still behaves like two seasons
Early September can still feel like summer, while later weeks can support longer midday walks and cooler evenings. Do not plan clothes or outdoor time from the month name alone.
Use the best-weather day for parks, bridges and waterfronts; use museums, markets and Broadway as flexible indoor anchors when heat, rain or alerts make the outdoor plan weaker.
