4 Days in New York City: A First-Time Itinerary With Room to Breathe

Four days is enough to see the classic first-trip areas and still have one day that feels like a neighborhood rather than a checklist. The best structure is three geographic anchor days plus one slower walking day.

FlexibilityModerate

Move park or skyline time around the weather.

01

Day 1: Lower Manhattan + Brooklyn

Start around the Financial District and waterfront, then cross the Brooklyn Bridge into DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. This is a strong opening day because the route changes character without complicated transit.

02

Day 2: Midtown + evening

Use one day for Grand Central, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue and Times Square. Add one paid viewpoint or Broadway if it is a priority.

03

Day 3: Central Park + one museum + Uptown

Give Central Park enough time to feel like a place, then choose one large museum and either the Upper West Side or Upper East Side.

04

Day 4: SoHo, Village and Lower East Side

Make the final day more local: walk SoHo, Greenwich Village, West Village and the Lower East Side, with food and café stops rather than timed attractions every hour.

05

What to move for weather

Keep Central Park, the Brooklyn Bridge and paid skyline views flexible. Museums and Midtown interiors are easier to keep fixed if conditions turn poor.
