5 Days in New York City: A Better-Paced Itinerary
Five days is a sweet spot for a first New York trip. You can cover the major areas without making every day feel like a timed obstacle course, and you can give at least one borough beyond Manhattan real attention.
Updated September 2026Enough time for highlights plus neighborhoods.
Keep each day geographically compact.
Useful for rain, skyline views or last-minute plans.
Day 1: Lower Manhattan + DUMBO
Begin with Lower Manhattan, then cross the Brooklyn Bridge into DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights. This combines history, skyline views and two boroughs without complicated transit.
Day 2: Midtown + evening plans
Use one Midtown day for Grand Central, Bryant Park, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue and Times Square. Keep the evening available for Broadway, a rooftop, a concert or dinner.
Day 3: Central Park + museum + Uptown
Choose one major museum and pair it with Central Park and either the Upper West Side or Upper East Side.
Day 4: SoHo, Village and Lower East Side
Make this a slower walking day through SoHo, Greenwich Village, the West Village and the Lower East Side.
Day 5: Brooklyn or Queens
Choose one focused borough day. Williamsburg and Greenpoint work well together in Brooklyn. Astoria and Long Island City make a practical Queens pairing.
