NYC Sports Guide: Teams, Venues, Tickets and Getting to the Game
New York sports are spread across several boroughs and into New Jersey, so the real planning decision is often transportation rather than the game itself. Choose the venue first, then build the rest of the day around the neighborhood and transit hub.
Subway and Metro-North both serve the stadium area.
Mets-Willets Point is the key transit stop.
Both arenas sit directly beside major transit hubs.
Baseball days are neighborhood days
Yankee Stadium and Citi Field are not Midtown attractions, and that is useful. A baseball game can become a Bronx or Queens day instead of a rushed out-and-back trip.
For Yankee Stadium, the 4, B and D subway lines and Metro-North create several approaches. Citi Field is built around the 7 train and Mets-Willets Point, with LIRR also useful for some riders.
MSG is the easiest major arena to reach from much of the region
Madison Square Garden sits directly above Penn Station, making it unusually convenient for subway riders as well as LIRR, NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak passengers.
That location also means you can combine an event with Koreatown, the Empire State Building, Chelsea or Midtown without adding another long transit leg.
Barclays Center is a transit-hub arena
Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center and Atlantic Terminal put the arena beside multiple subway lines and LIRR service. For many visitors, public transportation is simpler than trying to manage driving and parking around Downtown Brooklyn.
Park Slope, Fort Greene, Prospect Heights and Brooklyn restaurants can all fit naturally around the event.
MetLife requires event-specific transit planning
MetLife Stadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey rather than New York City. For large events, NJ TRANSIT commonly operates service through Secaucus Junction to Meadowlands Rail Station.
Because event service can differ, check NJ TRANSIT and the stadium before leaving rather than assuming the same rail pattern operates every day.
Ticket price is only one part of the sports budget
Add transportation, food, fees and the time needed to enter and exit the venue when comparing events. A cheaper ticket at a farther venue may not be the cheaper evening overall.
For resale tickets, compare the final checkout price rather than the first search result because service fees can materially change the total.
