Madison Square Garden Guide: Penn Station, Tickets and Event-Day Planning

Madison Square Garden is unusually simple to reach because it sits directly above Penn Station. The best plan is usually to use that transit advantage and build the rest of the evening around Midtown rather than adding a car or long rideshare pickup.

01

Use Penn Station as the planning anchor

MSG’s official directions identify 34 St-Penn Station on the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E lines as the primary subway access. Penn Station also serves LIRR, NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak.

That means many visitors can arrive without making a separate final transit transfer.

02

Eat before or after the event outside the arena

Koreatown, Chelsea and Midtown South offer many options within walking distance. Choosing food outside the arena can give you more control over price and timing.

If the event ends late, identify a realistic post-event option before the crowd exits rather than making the decision on the sidewalk.

03

Bag rules matter more at an arena than on a sightseeing day

MSG publishes event and venue policies that can change. Oversized bags can be prohibited, and event-specific restrictions may be stricter than a normal day in Midtown.

Check the event page before bringing shopping bags or luggage to the arena.

04

Avoid rideshare directly at the post-event peak when possible

Thousands of people leave the same blocks at once. The transit hub under the building is often more predictable than waiting for a car in the immediate post-event traffic.

If a car is necessary, walking several blocks away from the arena can create a cleaner pickup environment.
