NYC Gridlock Alert Days 2026: Current Dates, UNGA Status & Traffic Planning
New York City uses Gridlock Alert Days for some of the year’s most congested traffic periods. In 2026, eight World Cup match days were already designated Gridlock Alert Days in June and July. The next major list visitors are waiting for is the UN General Assembly and holiday-season schedule. As of September 5, NYC311 says those 2026 dates are not available yet, so NYC Dayline does not copy a prior year’s calendar forward.

The 2026 UNGA and holiday-season Gridlock Alert list is still pending
NYC311’s current Gridlock Alert Days page says the 2026 UN General Assembly and holiday-season Gridlock Alert Days are not available at this time and tells users to check back later in the year.
That means a website showing a finalized September-through-December 2026 Gridlock Alert calendar without a current NYC DOT or NYC311 source should be treated cautiously. Previous-year dates are useful history, not an official 2026 schedule.
Use this page as a status check, then verify NYC311 or NYC DOT before a time-sensitive Manhattan trip.
Some 2026 Gridlock Alert Days already happened during the World Cup
NYC DOT’s World Cup transportation page designated eight 2026 match days as Gridlock Alert Days because severe Midtown congestion was expected around city operations and match-related activity.
Those dates were Saturday June 13, Tuesday June 16, Monday June 22, Thursday June 25, Saturday June 27, Tuesday June 30, Sunday July 5 and Sunday July 19. They are already in the past as of this September update and are separate from the still-pending UNGA/holiday-season list.
What a Gridlock Alert Day actually means
NYC DOT describes Gridlock Alert Days as the busiest traffic days of the year, when traffic is expected to be at its slowest and most congested. DOT monitors traffic and can make real-time signal adjustments to help keep people moving.
A Gridlock Alert Day is not the same thing as saying every Manhattan street is closed. It is a citywide planning warning that driving can become unusually slow and unpredictable, especially in the Manhattan core.
Gridlock Alert Day is not the same as a construction embargo
NYC DOT construction embargoes restrict non-emergency permitted street work inside defined areas during major events. They can cover days that are not officially designated Gridlock Alert Days.
For example, DOT has already published a UN General Assembly construction embargo running September 8 through September 29, 2026, while NYC311 still says the corresponding 2026 UNGA Gridlock Alert Days have not been published. Treat those as two different traffic signals.
Gridlock Alert Day is also not a street-closure map
NYPD, NYC DOT and emergency agencies can impose street closures, checkpoints, detours or temporary restrictions based on events and security operations. Those decisions can change faster than a yearly Gridlock calendar.
Use the Gridlock designation to decide whether driving is a good idea, then use current traffic advisories, MTA service and street-closure sources to plan the specific trip.
For Midtown, rail plus walking is usually the resilient plan
NYC DOT explicitly recommends walking, biking and public transportation on Gridlock Alert Days. For time-sensitive Manhattan trips, subway or regional rail usually gives you a more predictable fixed segment than depending entirely on surface traffic.
Buses, taxis and rideshares can still be useful, but they share the street network affected by congestion, motorcades and temporary restrictions. Use them as flexible links rather than the only route to a hard deadline.
UN General Assembly is the next major period to watch
The UN’s 2026 High-level Week runs September 18–28, with the General Debate scheduled September 22–26 and September 28. Midtown East traffic and security pressure can build before the first General Debate speech.

Holiday-season Gridlock dates matter beyond UNGA
NYC traditionally uses additional Gridlock Alert Days during the late-year holiday period, when tourism, shopping, events and seasonal activity increase traffic pressure in Manhattan.
The 2026 holiday-season dates are also still pending on NYC311 as of September 5. Do not reuse a November or December list from 2025 as if it were the new year’s official schedule.
