Columbus Day / Italian Heritage & Indigenous Peoples’ Day NYC 2026: Parade, Schools, Parking & Trash
Monday, October 12, 2026 is a citywide planning day with several different names and several different operational effects. NYC Public Schools call it Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day and are closed. NYC DOT lists Columbus Day as an Alternate Side Parking suspension, but it is not one of DOT’s major legal holidays, so metered parking rules remain in effect where posted. DSNY recognizes the day as Columbus Day/Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day, but exact collection changes are published closer to the holiday. Separately, the Columbus Citizens Foundation has confirmed its 2026 Columbus Day Parade for October 12 and says the annual parade travels Fifth Avenue; as of NYC Dayline’s September 11 check, the organizer has not yet published a dependable 2026 parade start time or detailed street-by-street route on its main event listing.
NYCPS, NYC DOT, DSNY and the Columbus Citizens Foundation all identify the 2026 holiday/parade date.
NYCPS lists Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day as an all-day school closure.
NYC DOT lists Columbus Day on the 2026 Alternate Side Parking suspension calendar.
DOT suspends meters only on Sundays and major legal holidays; Oct 12 is not marked as a major legal holiday.
DSNY recognizes Oct 12 as a sanitation holiday; exact collection guidance should be checked close to the date.
CCF confirms the 2026 parade date and Fifth Avenue tradition; final time/route details are still pending.
NYC Public Schools are closed Monday, October 12
The official 2026–27 NYC Public Schools calendar lists Monday, October 12 as Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples’ Day and says schools are closed.
This is an all-day systemwide calendar closure, so families should not plan around a normal school arrival, dismissal or after-school routine unless their specific private or independent program separately confirms service.
For NYCPS families, treat Oct 12 as a full day off school and verify any separate childcare, athletics or community-program schedule directly with that provider.
Alternate Side Parking is suspended — but that does not make the day free parking
NYC DOT’s 2026 Alternate Side Parking calendar lists Monday, October 12 as a Columbus Day suspension. That means street-cleaning Alternate Side Parking rules are suspended for the day.
Other posted parking, standing and stopping rules still matter. An ASP suspension is not permission to ignore a No Parking, No Standing, commercial-meter or other posted regulation.
Read the actual curb sign before leaving the car. “ASP suspended” answers only the street-cleaning rule.
Parking meters remain in effect on October 12
NYC DOT says metered parking regulations are not in effect on Sundays or on six major legal holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Columbus Day appears on the ASP suspension calendar without the major-legal-holiday marker. October 12, 2026 is a Monday, not a Sunday, so drivers should expect to pay meters where the posted meter rule is active.
Do not assume a suspended ASP day also suspends meters. On Oct 12, follow the meter and posted curb rule unless NYC DOT issues a later specific change.
DSNY recognizes October 12 as a sanitation holiday — exact collection changes come later
NYC Sanitation lists Columbus Day/Italian Heritage Day/Indigenous People’s Day among its recognized holidays, and NYC311 includes October 12 on the 2026 sanitation-holiday calendar.
DSNY explicitly says holiday service is subject to change and directs residents whose collection day falls on a holiday to check the DSNY homepage, social channels, press releases or 311 for the final collection direction. That means it is too early on September 11 to state a specific make-up collection day as fact.
If Monday is your normal trash, recycling or compost day, recheck DSNY/311 close to Oct 12 before setting material out.
The 2026 Columbus Day Parade is confirmed for October 12
The Columbus Citizens Foundation’s 2026 event listing confirms the Columbus Day Parade for Monday, October 12. Its parade overview describes the annual event as a Fifth Avenue celebration of Italian American culture and heritage.
The same organizer notes that the 2025 parade did not go forward as planned because of a weather-related State of Emergency. That is a useful reminder that a confirmed date is not the same as a weather guarantee.
Use CCF as the primary parade source. Recheck the official parade page before traveling for the final 2026 start time, assembly details and route/closure information.
Do not publish an old parade time or route as if it were confirmed for 2026
As of September 11, CCF’s current parade event page gives the October 12 date but leaves the location field blank and does not display a start time. The broader parade page confirms Fifth Avenue as the traditional route but does not yet supply a detailed 2026 block-by-block route.
Older parade schedules can be useful historical context, but they should not be copied forward into a current guide until the 2026 organizer or NYC street-closure notice confirms them.
NYC Dayline should update this page once CCF or the City publishes the final parade operations rather than guessing from prior years.
The Columbus Celebration Weekend starts before Monday
CCF’s current 2026 events calendar lists the Columbus Citizens Foundation Gala on Saturday, October 10, a Wreath Laying Ceremony on Sunday, October 11 and the Columbus Day Parade on Monday, October 12.
These are separate events with different access rules. The parade is the public street event; do not assume a gala or foundation registration is required simply to watch the parade from a legal public viewing area.
If your goal is the parade, plan around Monday. Treat the gala and other foundation events as separate programs unless CCF says otherwise.
Expect Fifth Avenue traffic and pedestrian impacts even before final closure details are posted
A major Fifth Avenue parade changes vehicle movement, bus routing and pedestrian crossings around the event footprint. Exact 2026 street closures should come from NYC or the organizer closer to the date.
For Midtown and Upper East Side trips on October 12, subway-first planning reduces dependence on surface traffic. Use live MTA status and NYC Dayline’s current street-closure page on the morning of the event.
If you have a timed museum, restaurant or train reservation near Fifth Avenue, add a walking buffer and avoid relying on a crosstown car trip through the parade area.
