For a normal taxable restaurant meal in New York City, this calculator applies the standard 8.875% combined sales-tax rate to the pre-tax subtotal.
For example, a $100 taxable subtotal produces $8.88 in estimated sales tax before any gratuity or service charge is considered.

Use the food-and-drink subtotal before sales tax when it is available. The calculator applies tax to that amount and then adds the tip according to the basis you select.
If the restaurant already added a service charge or gratuity, read that line carefully before entering another tip.
Choose whether to tip before or after tax
People use both approaches. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal produces a slightly lower gratuity; tipping on the subtotal plus sales tax produces a slightly higher amount.

Split the restaurant bill between diners
The per-person result divides the calculated subtotal, tax and chosen tip evenly. Mandatory service charges are not inserted automatically.
