Where to Stay

Should You Stay in Times Square? Hotel Pros, Cons and Who It Actually Suits

Times Square can be an excellent hotel location for the right trip and an exhausting one for the wrong traveler. The decision should be based on Broadway plans, transit convenience and tolerance for crowds rather than the idea that every first-time visitor has to sleep there.

Biggest advantageCentral visitor location

Broadway, Midtown and many subway lines are close.

Biggest drawbackCrowds + intensity

The immediate streets can feel busy at almost every hour.

Best fitShort first trip

Especially useful when Broadway and Midtown dominate the itinerary.

01

The location is genuinely convenient

Times Square sits at a major subway hub and close to Broadway theaters, Rockefeller Center, Bryant Park and much of Midtown. For a short first visit, that centrality can save real time.

If you plan several Broadway nights, walking back to the hotel after the show is a meaningful advantage.

02

The atmosphere does not feel like every other part of New York

Times Square is designed around huge visitor volumes, bright advertising and commercial activity. Travelers looking for quiet residential streets or a neighborhood café routine may prefer another base.

You can still visit Times Square easily without sleeping in the middle of it.

03

Noise varies more by room than by neighborhood label

A high floor, courtyard-facing room or better window insulation can change the experience significantly. Conversely, a room facing a busy avenue can feel loud even outside the most famous blocks.

Read room-specific recent reviews rather than assuming every Times Square hotel has the same noise problem.

04

Food gets better when you walk a few blocks away

The immediate tourist core is not the only dining option. Hell’s Kitchen, Koreatown and other Midtown areas are close enough to use for meals while keeping a Times Square hotel.

Treat the hotel location as a transit base, not a requirement to eat every meal on the same block.

05

Families and first-timers can benefit from simplicity

For families, being able to walk to several attractions and return quickly can outweigh the crowds. First-time visitors who want the iconic Midtown experience may also value the energy rather than resent it.

Travelers staying a week or prioritizing neighborhoods may get more value from a less intense base.
