Empire State Building Guide: Is the Observatory Worth It?
The Empire State Building remains one of New York’s most recognizable experiences, but the best reason to buy an observatory ticket is that you specifically want this building and its view. Compare it with other decks before stacking several similar paid attractions.

Decide whether the icon itself matters
Some observation decks offer views that include the Empire State Building; this one obviously does not. The tradeoff is the experience of visiting the landmark itself and seeing Manhattan from one of its most famous towers.
Visibility should drive timing
A clear daytime or evening visit can be better than a fashionable sunset slot during poor visibility. Check conditions before committing valuable trip time to a high-rise view.
One paid deck is enough for many trips
If your itinerary already includes Top of the Rock, One World Observatory or another major deck, ask whether the second ticket adds a genuinely different experience. For many first visits, one paid viewpoint plus free waterfront views is a better balance.
Use the neighborhood around it
Koreatown, Herald Square, Madison Square and Flatiron are close enough to turn the observatory into part of a Midtown walking route rather than an isolated appointment.
