Gowanus is not a classic postcard neighborhood. Its appeal comes from the contrast between industrial infrastructure, the canal, new development and creative uses that have grown around older warehouse streets.
Expect contrast, not polish
Gowanus is most interesting when you appreciate the mix of infrastructure, warehouses, newer buildings and creative spaces rather than expecting a traditional brownstone district.
The canal gives the neighborhood a clear geographic spine.
Walk short sections deliberately
Some blocks are more pleasant for walking than others, so a targeted route works better than trying to cover every street.
Use nearby Carroll Gardens or Park Slope as part of the same outing.
Check venues individually
Performance spaces, bars and event venues can be part of the appeal, but programming changes constantly.
Use current venue information rather than relying on an old event list.
